Facebook Becomes The World’s No.1 Site!

Facebook

Huge online measurement firm Hitwise is reporting that Facebook has overtaken Google as the most visited site on the internet!

“Facebook.com recently reached the number one ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day as well as the weekend of March 6 and 7″ wrote Heather Dougherty on the company’s blog.

“The market share of visits to Facebook.com increased 185 percent last week as compared to the same week in 2009, while visits to Google.com increased 9 percent during the same time frame”

So what does this mean for website marketers?

It’s FURTHER proof that you MUST have a Facebook (or better yet, a Social Media) strategy when marketing your website.

We’ve recently started seeing Twitter results appearing in Google results and and Facebook groups and pages are regularly appearing on page 1 too. Google loves RECENT content, and Social Media is some of the most recent content there is. Most importantly for Google, the amount of background information available in social networks means it’s MUCH easier to tell what’s “relevant” and what’s not.
